Check with the dudes at Clever Cycles. You are always welcome to come ride mine if you like some weekend, but it sounds like Todd and Dean have several awaiting a new home at their top secret underground bunker ;-)

I think I've got a ride lined up through other means. Thanks for the suggestion of checking with Clever Cycles.
I agree with Adam, that even as excited as I am about the connection with my Dutch heritage and the idea of Baktietsen all over town here, I DO like the idea of such a cargo bike being made locally. Has anyone done an objective comparison of the two (HPM Long Haul vs. Bakfiets) online anywhere? I have ridden both of them to compare before, but I'd like to hear an objective comparison. --you know, sort of like what you see that guy doing for cars on that weekend PBS Show. :)

I think Velovision is doing a Bakfiets review in their next issue, but I doubt it will have any comparison to the HPM Long Haul.

The folks at Magpie have no doubt logged more miles on HPM machines than just about anyone. Maybe check with Todd B and Todd F for more opinions. I know it's an issue that has been on their minds as of late.

You could always wait a bit longer and test the forthcoming PDX built cargobikes. I know their working up some prototypes very soon, so maybe there will be another local entry this spring.

I've ridden both of the cargo bikes that Todd B. has access to. I am currently riding his Bakfiets and loving it! Dean and I were riding two of them loaded with our kids side by side down Alberta the other day. That cranked some heads. :)

Yes, Todd B. can provide good insite as to the strengths and weaknesses of each bike.

P.S. I plan on riding the Bakfiets to the npGREENWAY community meeting Thursday night, Feb 15th at 7:00. See http://www.npgreenway.org

I don't have any details about the PDX bakfiets other than to say that the guys working on it have some very good ideas and nice refinements over my Dutch cargobike. I've spent quite a bit of time talking to them about how I'd improve about my Bakfiets if I had it to do over, what I wouldn't change, what features are key if you're hauling kids, etc. Last I heard the top secret PDX built bakfiets is currently in the prototype phase, so hopefully we'll see more this spring. They do have a web domain registered, but no blog or content yet. I think Jonathan Maus over at BikePortland.org will get the whole scoop for us when the time comes time for the project to go public. Wish I had more to tell you...

hmmmm.... top secret.... interesting :) I'd be happy to provide them input about my experiences of riding one around Portland for the last two weeks. Send them my way if they want more user data.
